The Voice

The Voice

Then they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. The Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

He said, “I heard Your voice in the garden and was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself.” M170

Those are the words found in Genesis 3:8-10. What we see is that fear entered the heart of man. This fear was not from being naked but from the knowledge of being naked.

FEAR WAS NOT FROM BEING NAKED BUT FROM THE KNOWLEDGE OF BEING NAKED

It was the fear of knowing that although they were covered with fig leaves, they were still naked. This knowledge opened their eyes and revealed to them the fact of nakedness that was recorded in Genesis 3:7.

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. So, they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. M171

Since their nakedness was covered before they ate, we must understand why they were afraid after they ate. It was the knowledge of what being naked truly meant.

Being naked in today’s context means that we are without clothes, but there is more to being naked that we need to understand.

In Merriam-Webster naked is defined as:

  • not covered by clothing
  • devoid of customary or natural covering
  • not enclosed in a scabbard
  • not provided with a shade
  • lacking embellishment
  • unarmed, defenseless
  • lacking confirmation or support
  • devoid of concealment or disguise
  • not backed by the writer’s ownership of the commodity contract or security MW18

We now begin to grasp why the knowledge of being naked brought about fear in them and why this knowledge is also vital for us to understand.

Man and his wife were covered with fig leaves and were still afraid of being naked. It was because they had the knowledge of what being naked meant.

When they were naked, they were no longer backed by the writer’s (creators) ownership of them, their contract was void, and they had no security. The ownership that Jesus Christ, the Lord God had on them was no longer absolute. The security that was provided to them by default was no longer available, and their contract of everlasting life was canceled.

THEIR CONTRACT OF EVERLASTING LIFE WAS CANCELLED

They were devoid of the customary or natural covering that would allow them to be in the presence of the Lord God.

We see something similar mentioned in Ezekiel 28:11-19, about the coverings of the anointed cherub.

Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

You had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold. The workmanship of your settings and sockets was in you; on the day that you were created, they were prepared.

You were the anointed cherub that covers, and I set you there; you were upon the holy mountain of God; you walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until iniquity was found in you. By the multitude of your merchandise, you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; therefore I have cast you as profane out of the mountain of God; and I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty;
you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness;
I cast you to the ground, I lay you before kings, that they may see you.

You have defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trade; therefore, I have brought fire out from your midst; it has devoured you,
and I have turned you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all those who see you.

All those who know you among the people are astonished at you; you are a terror, and you shall cease to be forever. M172

Being naked meant that man and his wife were devoid of the customary covering that they were entitled to, a covering that was natural and did not reveal their nakedness.

In Ezekiel 28:14, we learn who Satan was.

You were the anointed cherub that covers, and I set you there; you were upon the holy mountain of God; you walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. M173

Satan was placed there in Eden, in the garden of God by the Lord God to provide a covering as Satan was a covering cherub.

SATAN WAS A COVERING CHERUB

Now we need to understand what Satan was supposed to provide a covering over. To understand that, we first need to understand the meaning of the word covering.

In Merriam-Webster covering is defined as:

  • something that covers or conceals MW19

So, Satan was a cherub that had an anointing to cover something and conceal it and was placed there in the garden of Eden by the Lord God to fulfill his anointing.

Now, what was Satan anointed to cover and conceal?

To find the answer to that, we need to understand the meaning behind his anointing, which is to cover.

The word cover is defined in Merriam-Webster as:

  • to guard from attack
  • to afford protection or security to
  • to maintain a check on especially by patrolling
  • to hide from sight or knowledge
  • to lay or spread something over
  • to place or set a cover or covering over
  • to have as one’s territory or field of activity MW20

This means that the anointed cherub that covers, that had the seal of perfection and was full of wisdom, was anointed to cover man and his wife, by guarding from attack, to extend protection and security, to maintain a check on by patrolling, the territory that was assigned, being the garden of Eden.

The anointed cherub that covers was to hide from sight and knowledge the revelation of nakedness from the man and his wife.

We could say that in Eden, in the garden of God, man and his wife were under the protection or covering of a cherub that had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

Man and his wife had a baby sitter that was tasked and anointed to ensure nothing happens to them. For they were covered by the perfect beauty that God had given Satan.

But the irony of it all is the cherub that was anointed to protect man from the knowledge of good and evil, from the knowledge of nakedness; was the same cherub that led man to the knowledge he was commanded not to partake of it.

Using the man’s wife, Satan got the man to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, so their nakedness could be revealed, and they would no longer be under Satan’s protection.

This is why in Ezekiel 28:15, it says.

You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until iniquity was found in you. M174

From the day Satan was created, his ways were perfect. The way he looked after the man and his wife was perfect. How he covered them with his perfect beauty, all perfect. Until iniquity was found in him.

Merriam-Webster defines iniquity as:

  • gross injustice
  • a wicked act or thing MW21

Satan was perfect, doing everything correctly until he did a wicked act, which resulted in gross injustice to the man and his wife. This was when iniquity was found in Satan.

It was because man and his wife were now naked; they were exposed to the sword.

In Merriam-Webster, scabbard is defined as:

  • a protective case for a sword that covers the blade MW22

In Genesis 3:10.

He said, “I heard Your voice in the garden and was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself.” M175

Why did the man hide himself when he heard the voice of the Lord God?

Hebrews 4:12 has the answer to that.

For the word of God is alive, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intents of the heart. M176

The voice or words of God are sharper than any two-edged sword when the man and his wife were naked; the protective case they had for the Word of God was removed. This allowed the Word of God to pierce them, and therefore, was able to judge the thoughts and intents of their hearts.

In John 1:1-15, we learn not only that the Word is God, but who the Word or voice of God is.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were created through Him, and without Him nothing was created that was created. In Him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. The light shines in darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. This man came as a witness in order to testify concerning the Light, that all men through Him might believe. He was not this Light, but was sent in order to testify concerning the Light.

The true Light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. Yet to all who received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God, to those who believed in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John bore witness of Him and cried out, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”  We have all received from His fullness grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only Son, who is at the Father’s side, has made Him known. M177

It is through the words recorded in John 1 that we learn that the Lord God, Jesus Christ, is the word of God. We also know that the first words God said recorded in Genesis 1:3 were.

God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. M178

THE LORD GOD, JESUS CHRIST IS THE WORD OF GOD

In John 1:9, John said something fascinating about Jesus.

The true Light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. M179

The first exciting thing is that Jesus is the true light. This is very important to remember because, in 2 Corinthians 11:14, we learn this.

And no wonder! For even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. M180

Because Satan disguised himself as an angel of light, we are reminded in 1 John 4:1-3, to test all spirits.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and is already in the world. M181

Now let’s look at the second thing said in John 1:9.

The true Light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. M182

The true light, which is Jesus Christ, enlightens everyone. To grasp the meaning of this statement, we need to understand what the word enlighten means.

In Merriam-Webster, enlighten is defined as:

  • to furnish knowledge to
  • to give spiritual insight to
  • to give knowledge or understanding to (someone)
  • to explain something to (someone) MW23

Jesus Christ, who is the true light enlightens everyone, by furnishing them with knowledge, spiritual insight, understanding, and explaining the hidden mysteries of God.

We see in John 3:16-21 how Jesus enlightened Nicodemus by providing the spiritual insight about light.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned. But he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the verdict, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that it may be revealed that his deeds have been done in God.” M183

Merriam-Webster defined that being naked meant that one is not provided with shade, and when in the light, the deeds are exposed.

As Jesus is the Lord God and the true light, when He walked in the Garden of Eden, the nakedness of the man and his wife exposed them to the light, and their nakedness left them without a shade. Their assigned covering cherub had exposed them to the light and judgment of the Lord God.

Man’s fall from the garden left him naked and exposed to the light of God, but God devised a way in which He could meet the man and talk with him. A way in which He could cover His light and glory, from the nakedness and sin of man.

So, God devised a throne on earth where His presence could rest, and He could then communicate with a man once more while covering His glory and light. We learn about this throne in Exodus 25:10-22.

They shall make an ark of acacia wood two and a half cubits long, and one and a half cubits wide, and one and a half cubits high. You shall overlay it with pure gold, inside and out shall you overlay it, and you shall make a gold border around it. You shall cast four gold rings for it and put them on the four feet with two rings on the one side of it and two rings on the other side of it. You shall make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. You shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark in order to carry the ark with them. The poles must remain in the rings of the ark. They must not be removed from it. You shall put into the ark the testimony which I shall give you.

You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end and the other cherub on the other end. From the mercy seat you shall make the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim shall stretch forth their wings upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another. The faces of the cherubim are to face toward the mercy seat. You shall put the mercy seat above upon the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I will give you. I will meet with you there, and I will meet with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony. I will speak with you all that I will command you for the children of Israel. M184

Just as Satan was a covering cherub created to protect man, the Lord Jesus instructed Moses how to create two covering cherub in Exodus 25:20.

The cherubim shall stretch forth their wings upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another. The faces of the cherubim are to face toward the mercy seat. M185

In Psalm 91:1-16, we learn about the shadow of the Almighty and how the covering of His wings offers us protection from the iniquity, the wickedness, and injustice of Satan.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter and from the deadly pestilence.

He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall find protection; His faithfulness shall be your shield and wall.

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; nor of the pestilence that pursues in darkness, nor of the destruction that strikes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.

Only with your eyes shall you behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling, there shall be no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your tent; for He shall give His angels charge over you to guard you in all your ways.

They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

You shall tread upon the lion and adder; the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, and I will deliver him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation. M186

The mercy seat that rested upon the ark was where Jesus would come to talk, and the wings of the cherubim acted as the shade.

As we continue our journey in understanding the meaning of being naked, what we have next on the list as defined by Merriam-Webster is:

  • lacking embellishment

In Merriam-Webster, the word embellish is defined as:

  • to make beautiful with ornamentation
  • to heighten the attractiveness of by adding decorative or fanciful details
  • to decorate (something) by adding special details and features: to make (something) more appealing or attractive MW24

When man ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, he and his wife were naked. They lacked embellishment, and they lacked the special details that added to their beauty, making them less appealing and attractive.

The man and his wife were adorned with an anointed covering cherub. The cherub that was spoken about in Ezekiel 28:11-13.

Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

You had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold.

The workmanship of your settings and sockets was in you; on the day that you were created, they were prepared. M187

The man and his wife were naked and lacked the embellishment of the anointed cherub that had the seal of perfection and was adorned with every precious stone.

They were now unprotected and exposed. In 1 Peter 3:1-7, we learn about how we are to adorn ourselves today and what embellishments God is looking for today.

Likewise you wives, be submissive to your own husbands, so that if any do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, as they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Do not let your adorning be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine clothing. But let it be the hidden nature of the heart, that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in the old times, the holy women, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You are her children as long as you do right and are not afraid with any terror.

Likewise, you husbands, live considerately with your wives, giving honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they too are also heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. M188

What’s very important and, in some cases, critical to understanding is the relationship to this type of adornment and the hindrance to prayer.

UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP TO ADORNMENT AND PRAYER

In Merriam-Webster, hindrance is defined as:

  • the state of being interfered with, held back, or slowed down
  • a person or thing that interferes with or slows the progress of someone or something
  • the act of interfering with or slowing the progress of someone or something
  • a person or thing that makes a situation difficult
  • the act of making it difficult for someone to act or for something to be done MW25

It is here we get a glimpse into why Satan, the serpent, chose to deceive the woman. Satan understood how things work, and by using the woman, he was able to create a hindrance to the prayers of man.

When the woman is not adorned correctly, the prayers of man can be interfered with, held back, and slowed down. He slows down the progress that could be made on something or with someone and makes a situation difficult. He makes it difficult for someone to act or for something to be done about it.

Satan, in the beginning, targeted the woman because he understands scripture and how it works.

We have to remember what the Lord God told us in Ezekiel 28:12.

Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, Thus says the Lord God: You had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. M189

Satan, the serpent, was full of wisdom. This wisdom is what he is misusing to interfere with the prayers and how he creates delay.

In 1 Peter 3:5-6, we are given some insight into a key that helped unlock prayers and how it worked in the old times.

For in this manner, in the old times, the holy women, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You are her children as long as you do right and are not afraid with any terror. M190

We see this spoken about again in 1 Timothy 2:1-15 (NIV) and how the adornment and covering is essential and linked to prayer.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.

Therefore, I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. N5

In today’s society, the above would not sit well with a lot of people. However, it forms the foundation of prayer. This is what Satan is working to erode, the foundation of having our prayers answered on time. By eroding the foundation, it creates a natural hindrance to prayer, creating interference, causing a delay, and making it difficult for the solution to reach us.

Prayer is the most effective tool anybody has against the schemes of the enemy. By being naked, as defined earlier in Merriam-Webster, we are now:

  • unarmed, defenseless

We have been stripped of our covering, which has left us unarmed and defenseless. However, for every problem, there is a solution, and with every solution, we will see the connection to prayer.

God has given us a way to arm and defend ourselves. We see this spoken about in Ephesians 6:10-20.

Finally, my brothers, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your waist girded with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, having your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace, and above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to extinguish all the fiery arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray in the Spirit always with all kinds of prayer and supplication. To that end be alert with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. Pray for me, that the power to speak may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may speak boldly as I ought to speak. M191

When the man ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, he and his wife were naked. They were unarmed and defenseless. This single act started the battle between Satan and everything the Lord God created.

This is why we have to put on the whole armor of God and pray in the Spirit always. We need to have the knowledge and wisdom to effectively use the tools we have been provided against the enemy’s ability to interfere due to our nakedness.

Sometimes we are unclear about the status of our prayers, and this is due to being naked also. The following definition of being naked as defined by Merriam-Webster is:

  • lacking confirmation or support

We may not realize the impact of lacking confirmation or support is at first, but how many times have we asked the Lord for answers to our questions. For a little guidance to ensure we make the right choices. How many times did we ask for an answer only to find none? How many times has our nakedness and lack of knowledge become an obstacle from receiving the promises of the Lord? The promises that were spoken to us by Jesus in Matthew 7:7-12.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, it will be opened.

“What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a snake? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Therefore, everything you would like men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. M192

Now we need to understand these words spoken to us by Jesus. If we read very carefully and we must read these words very carefully, we will realize something fundamental.

The first thing we will realize is that if we should ask for something, we must ask our Father in heaven.

IF WE SHOULD ASK FOR SOMETHING, WE MUST ASK OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN

We need to learn who we should be asking and what we should be asking. For as it says in Matthew 7:9-11.

“What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a snake? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! M193

We should be asking our Father in heaven, and we should be asking for gifts.

Now we know that we cannot approach our Father in heaven as we are naked and inherited the original sin of nakedness from Adam. However, it is also important to remember that Jesus is our covering. Jesus provides us a covering, so we have access to our Father in heaven.

When we ask our Father in heaven for solutions to our daily problems and issues we often pray about, we must do it the right way. Jesus taught us the most effective way to pray to our Father in heaven, which is recorded in Matthew 6:9-13.

Therefore, pray in this manner:

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. M194

Before we get into the details of this prayer, we first need to understand how Jesus taught us to pray.

In Matthew 6:5-8, Jesus said.

“When you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask Him. M195

Jesus provided some crucial points about praying to our Father in heaven that we first need to be aware of. Then we need to understand, and finally, we need to practice if we are to see our prayers bear fruit.

We find these in Matthew 6:6-7.

But you, when you pray, enter your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions, as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. M196

The key points are:

  1. Enter your closet.
  2. Shut the door.
  3. In secret
  4. Don’t use vain repetitions

The first key point spoken about by Jesus is for us to enter our closet. In Merriam-Webster, the word closet is defined as follows:

  • a place of retreat or privacy
  • a state or condition of secrecy, privacy, or obscurity
  • an apartment or small room for privacy
  • official’s private chamber
  • to take into a closet for a secret interview
  • being so in private
  • to put (yourself) in a room in order to be alone
  • to bring (someone) into a room in order to talk privately MW26

We are asked to enter a private place, to enter a state of secrecy and privacy, to enter a small room or a private chamber.

As we progress, we begin to see something exposed in the meaning of the word closet. The word closet means to take for a secret interview, being so private, by being alone, we bring someone into a room to talk privately.

By being in this closet when we are alone, we invite the presence of our Father in heaven to hear our prayer in private.

After we have entered this private room, we are asked to shut the door. This is very important to understand. First, we need to understand the meaning of the word shut as defined in Merriam-Webster:

  • to move into position to close an opening
  • to prevent entrance to or passage to or from
  • to fasten with a lock or bolt
  • to cause to cease or suspend an operation or activity MW27

Now we need to understand the meaning of the word door in Merriam-Webster:

  • a usually swinging or sliding barrier by which an entry is closed and opened
  • a means of access or participation
  • as a charge against one as being responsible
  • laid the blame at our door MW28

When we pray, Jesus said we first need to enter our private place, and after we have entered there, we are to shut our door.

We are to move into a position to close an opening, to prevent entrance or passage, for us to cause an operation or activity to be suspended.

It is vital that we are positioned to shut and close any opening to the enemy. Doing this allows us to prevent and suspend any operation and activity of the enemy. It creates a barrier and prevents access or participation from anyone to lay a charge against us and from laying the blame on us. They will have to leave the blame or accusation at our door.

Understanding how to pray is critical if we want our prayers to be answered. The knowledge of being naked meant that the man and his wife, according to Merriam-Webster, were:

  • devoid of concealment or disguise

We need to look into the meaning of two words to understand how being naked affected them and us.

The first is devoid, and that is defined in Merriam-Webster as:

  • being without a usual, typical, or expected attribute or accompaniment
  • completely without MW29

After eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the man and his wife were now naked and without their usual, typical covering or accompaniment. They were now without the covering.

We being to understand the ramifications of this when we look into the meaning of the word conceal as defined in Merriam-Webster:

  • to prevent disclosure or recognition of
  • to place out of sight
  • to keep (something) secret MW30

The man and his wife were removed (devoid) of the ability to prevent disclosure and removed from recognition. They had to be placed out of sight and were no longer able to be kept a secret.

By getting the man to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the dragon, the ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, got out of his created obligation. The covering cherub no longer had to be the usual, typical, or expected attribute or accompaniment to man and his wife. He could be completely free from being their covering.

The man and his wife would now no longer be recognized in the same way. He knew that they would no longer be viewed in the same way as before by the Lord. Their existence would no longer be something that would be secret, and they would be exposed to the world around them.

It is through this understanding that the richness of the words found in Proverbs 25:2 can be understood.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter. M197

The glory of God surrounded the man and his wife, and they were concealed until that was taken away from them. The enemy wanted to strip man from his covering. Although the enemy may have temporarily succeeded in his objective, we got the best cover possible. We got the Most High, Jesus Christ as our covering, and we see this explained in Proverbs 91:1-16.

What the man and his wife lost by eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, we regained through Jesus Christ.

Merriam-Webster has one more definition of naked that we will find extremely interesting:

  • not backed by the writer’s ownership of the commodity contract or security

When man ate of the fruit from the tree he was commanded not to eat from, he and his wife were no longer backed by the creator’s ownership contract and security.

An excellent example to understand this would be like taking a screwdriver and opening an electronic device that state’s warranty void if opened.

If the product is not working as designed we need to take it to the manufacturer to resolve, any attempt on our part to resolve the issue by opening it would void the warranty the creator of the product has on it.

Satan wanted to void the warranty and protection that the man and his wife were under, by getting them to eat of the tree they were commanded not to.

We see this all play out in Genesis 3:4-7.

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasing to the eyes and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. So, they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. M199

Through a subtle, deceptive way, Satan got the women to eat first; in that way, man could also be deceived. It was important for Satan to do it this way because he knew that the seal that provided that warranty, ownership, and security was placed on the man and not the woman, she inherited that by default.

It’s sort of similar to the void if removed sticker placed on the seam of many items. You can remove all the screws that hold the items together, but to open it you have to break the seal, which voids the warranty.

When man ate of the fruit, he broke the seal (the command not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil) and thus created a “void if opened” moment for both him and his wife.

They were as we are now with the knowledge of what it truly meant to be naked.

THEY WERE AS WE ARE NOW WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT IT TRULY MEANT TO BE NAKED
